The Heart Behind Haven Schooling
Haven Schooling began with a simple conviction: children thrive when they are known, valued, and taught in ways that honor how God uniquely designed them.
Founder Melanie Williams first experienced this truth in 2017 while homeschooling her own children. What started with a kitchen table and a handful of eager learners has grown into a flourishing educational ministry serving families across Haywood County.
Today, Haven Schooling stands on four foundational pillars:
1. Faith
Christ is at the center of everything—from academics and habits of mind to relationships, responsibilities, and purpose. Students learn to discern God’s voice, understand His design for their lives, and live out their faith with courage and joy.
2. Mastery
Instead of rushing through content, students are supported until they truly understand. Mastery-based learning builds confidence, strengthens foundations, and helps every child progress at their own pace.

Learning happens best within relationships. Multi-age groups, small classes, and intentional parent partnership create a family-like environment where every child is known, supported, and celebrated.

Whether they enroll in full academic support, select core classes, or enrichment-only options, Haven Schooling empowers parents to build a plan that fits their child’s strengths, pace, and God-given purpose.
All families at Haywood Haven are registered homeschoolers with the state of North Carolina, preserving their authority while giving them access to meaningful structure, community, and support.
A Blended Model That Honors Family Life
Haven Schooling rejects the cultural assumption that children require five days a week and seven hours a day of classroom instruction.
Instead, students attend classes on campus two or three days a week, and complete one or two guided home-learning days with their parents:
- Two-day students: 2 days on campus + 2 home-learning days
- Three-day students: 3 days on campus + 1 home-learning day
This hybrid model allows students to:
- Build real-life skills
- Work alongside parents in family businesses
- Explore personal interests
- Rest, play, and be outdoors
- Develop responsibility and independence
- Experience a slower, healthier childhood
It also strengthens families—keeping parents connected to their child’s learning and helping them understand how God is shaping their child.

Haywood Haven has always offered classes through high school. In 2025, the program intentionally paused at 6th grade to design a deeper and more intentional purpose-centered track for middle and high school.
The upcoming teen program will focus on:

- Trades and hands-on apprenticeships
- Leadership and service
