How We Learn

Faith. Mastery. Community. Purpose.

At Haywood Haven, education is discipleship in action. We believe children learn best when their hearts are at peace, their minds are curious, and their teachers and parents work together to nurture both faith and skill.

Our model blends academic excellence, Christian discipleship, and hands-on discovery to help students discern God’s purpose for their lives and equip them to live it well.

Mastery-Based Learning

We don’t move children forward because a calendar says it’s time; we move them forward when they’ve mastered a concept. Small groups of about eight to ten students allow teachers to give focused, individualized instruction that builds confidence and competence.

Students are placed by skill level rather than age for math and language arts, ensuring that each learner is challenged appropriately and supported fully. This mastery-based model allows children to strengthen their foundations, celebrate growth, and move forward with confidence, step by step and skill by skill.

Hands-On & Movement-Rich Learning

Children are designed by God to move, create, and explore. At Haywood Haven, learning happens through active engagement — not worksheets alone. Students use manipulatives, conduct experiments, and participate in projects that make learning joyful, memorable, and connected to the real world.

We also believe movement is part of learning, not a break from it. Students enjoy over two hours of daily play and physical activity, including our extended outdoor Lunch & Play period. These rhythms help children focus better, regulate emotions, and experience the joy of learning in balance with rest and play.

Three Learning Communities

Our days are intentionally structured to reflect how children grow best — through belonging, purpose, and shared experience.

Community Group

A flexible, slow start to the morning (arrival between 8:00–8:30) lets students connect through play, art, and building activities before we gather at 8:30 for Morning Meeting, prayer, and scripture. We come back together for Lunch & Play, a full hour and twenty minutes of outdoor time and social connection.

Peer (Homebase) Group

Students meet daily with their same-age peers for devotionals and snack, and attend History, Science, and Science Lab together, strengthening both faith and friendship.

Skill-Based Group

For math and language arts, students learn in small groups by skill level. Teachers guide instruction that targets each student’s needs while still progressing as a team.
Together, these communities create balance — academic challenge, spiritual grounding, and emotional connection.

Flexible Scheduling

Haywood Haven’s hybrid model gives families the freedom to build a schedule that fits their needs while maintaining structure and accountability. Our classes are offered à la carte, so families can choose full- or half-day options based on what works best for their rhythm and goals.

  • Tuesday & Wednesday: Core instruction (required)
  • Thursday: Optional enrichment and extended learning
  • Flexible à la carte model: Families can register for individual classes or full days

If a student attends only two days, parents complete Thursday lessons at home. We support families with clear communication and weekly guides, ensuring every student stays on pace with peers and continues to master essential skills.

Parent Partnership

At Haywood Haven, parents are not bystanders, they’re co-creators.

We believe parents hold God-given insight into their child’s heart and learning journey. Our teachers provide expert instruction and communication, while parents reinforce learning at home through purposeful assignments and discipleship.

Weekly communication ensures parents know what’s being covered in class, what to complete at home, and how to stay connected to their child’s growth.

Education as Discipleship

We see every subject, math, science, writing, art, as an opportunity to explore God’s truth and design.

As Proverbs 1:7 reminds us, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.”

When children learn through this lens, education becomes worship, and life itself becomes the classroom where God’s purpose unfolds.
